Don Pasquale, vieillard riche mais sans enfant, veut se marier pour
d�sh�riter son neveu dont il d�sapprouve le projet matrimonial.
Pour lui donner une le�on, ses amis mettent en sc�ne un simulacre
de mariage qui l�indispose tant et si bien qu�il consent vite au
mariage de son neveu et le reconna�t � nouveau comme son h�ritier.
Dans ce petit chef-d�ouvre du genre bouffe, Donizetti dissimule �
peine une critique de la morale bourgeoise. Ce th�me avait pour lui
une actualit� telle que, contrairement aux habitudes, le
compositeur recommanda pour ses personnages des costumes bourgeois
de son temps: "alla borghese moderna". Dans un style qui
int�gre l�h�ritage musical de Mozart et la tradition italienne,
avec une grande attention port�e � l�orchestre, Donizetti enfile
les num�ros brillants avec une verve intarissable.
